Very religious christians are often uncomfortable with the evolutionary theory because it seems to disregard the theory they've been raised on as to how humans came about. The Christian theory suggests that man was made from the dust, and God breathed life into the earth and named that life Man. Women are said to have been made from the rib of Man. So when a theory comes about that suggests that the earth started with fish, then lizards, then mammals, then monkeys, then humans, it shakes their confidence in their religious theory. Many, if not all, believers in Creationism completely disregard the evolutionary theory, passing it off as "sacrilegious" and "blasphemy".

Its because the "evolutionary theory" is a given. We KNOW how and why these genders roles came into being, evolution DID play a part. The issue that most people are interested in, is not evolution...but rather the fact that WOMEN seem to have shed their "biological" gender roles as you say. Whereas men are still forced to stick to them. Women have a CHOICE of being either traditional, or shedding their gender roles by adopting feminism. They have the best both worlds - men do NOT. They HAVE to be tough. They HAVE to "man up" - as society says, there is no choice for them!!

Not only is an evolutionary view of things useful to looking at gender studies, but it is also useful for looking at politics and government. It was shortly after women were given the vote that for the first time in U.S. history the government began to grow significantly and not later contract. Before the government would only grow in times of war, but then it would later shrink. Back in the day, if a woman made a poor choice in her mate or got knocked up without a husband (or he died) this was as good as a death sentence (or lifelong poverty) for many women and their offspring. Women didn't used to contribute nearly as much financially as men did, and so it was beneficial for them to vote laws into place which yielded higher taxes and provided more benefits for single mothers and their children. Single mothers are still the most reliable voting bloc of the democrat party.

Evolutionary theory does not completely explain the world around us. Some things appear to be so complex that they could not have gradually evolved step-by-step. Many aspects of microbiology, for example, involve systems or organisms that do not seem to have evolved. A good site on so-called "intelligent design" can give you a lot of information about the opposition to evolutionary theory.

They're often uncomfortable with it because religion tells us (well, Christianity, at least) that we were all created how we are now. This, of course, is the theory of creationism. This makes many people uncomfortable because many Americans really incorporate Christianity into their lives, and they have a tendency to take what the Bible says and go with that. (This is not to say that all Christians do this, but many do.)

Those who argue against evolutionary theory almost certainly do not understand either evolution or what a theory is. If they are putting forward a belief in a document like the bible and give their reasons as you described and refuse to put evolution to a test of AT LEAST equal difficulty, that is indeed, intellectual dishonesty. But, being able to make statements about there being no contradictions in the bible when there quite honestly IS, that shows that the person making these statements does not understand what makes evidence legitimate and how far any given piece of evidence can be trusted. **edit** I agree with Sam (a post above) as well, in that evolution does not prove or disprove god. They are two different topics entirely. Consider that if you believe in god, why could god not have used evolution as his mechanism for the maturation of life? I don't believe that for a second, but it just shows that the two are not mutually exclusive. A christian scientist who headed the human genome project said that the DNA evidence alone was enough to prove evolution. But, he's still a devout christian.
