No, absolutely not!
I bough a macbook last year for my 5-year-old daughter mainly for watching DVD, internet surfing, some homeworks and photo viewing. The reasons were she liked it in white, it's cute and she saw other young people use it on TV (advertising strategy). None of us ever used a Macbook before and we have 2 PCs and a Vaio (2006 series). It was a bad decision, my daughter's fed up with the Mac few days after we bought it becuase it has very poor viewing angle, keyboard lay-out in Mac offers less functions/shortcuts and the way it works different from a PC and none of us found a good reason to learn how to use a mac while we can work comfortably with a PC, both at work/school and at home. And many softwares we have before (photo, printing, scanning...) can not be run on the mac. We had to install Windows XP (using Bootcamp) and that is the compromise. I would never buy this mac if it can not be converted to a PC using bootcamp.
However, I must to admit that the Mac is an eye-catcher, cute, sleek and the build is good, good battery life and customer supports is very very good (they have a big store on George Street in Sydney CBD where you can bring your Mac there for service, repair, questions...). Other than that, Mac does not mean more to me (forget about what people say about Mac operation system, the leopard or something, I do not remember/care, Windows still offers you much better and more usefull things, sadly).
If you have never used Mac before, I strongly suggest you to stay away from this fashionable laptop. Now in the market there are quite many other "cute" alternative options for the Mac book. I have never been totally happy with my Vaio but in comparison to the mac (2008 series), the Vaio is way better in screen (colors, view angle, brightness...), speaker, functionalities....By the way, I do not intentionally suggest a Vaio. My next laptop will never be a Mac neither a Vaio (overpriced, expensive aaccessories, unstable, bad customer supports). May be a HP (tx2-1020?).
Here's why you should get a Mac:: There are NO CONS. The MacBook does both WinBloze and OSX, no other computer can make that statement. You have the best of the best. Apple Stores are popping up all over and you can make an appointment for a time and date, bring your computer there. They will troubleshoot it and fix it if it's a software problem it's FREE. What other computer company has stores and can make that statement? Get the 2.4 GHz with 4Gigs Ram and you got a speed machine like mine. The WinBloze people may not like a Mac computer but I'll bet they all have iPods. Go Mac and Never Go Back.
If you read the questions here you will notice that most problems are about every computer except a Mac.
There's only 4 models, and the Macbook Air is a piece of crap.
Personally, I'd say you shouldn't get any Macbook, but as long as you don't get a Macbook Air you'll probably be ok.
Why is it you want a macbook?? because they are popular?? I would say stay away from mac if you haven't had any life-changingly horrible experiences with PC's.. Mac is not great in my opinion.. If you are worried about viruses on PC's try using Linux Ubuntu, it's an operating system that is FREE and doesnt have viruses. Also, there are programs for it that are EXACTLY like those for Windows, such as Word, Excel..
